I'm goin back a ways, maybe, but does any1 remember how unbelievable a tone Neil Peart used to get outta his 12" CLOSED tom?! I mean, i REALLY dug that sound he got out've it; I never seemed to be able to tork my 12" enuf to get that hi-pitched yet fat sound he got out've it...any1 know his 'secret?' [heads? EQ'ing? toms "Vibra-fibed", etc.? - Prob a lil bit of ea...] I went to using an 8" or 10" to get that hi-p yet beefy tone [which sound killer]...
The releases I'm refer'g to specif are Perm Wavs, MP's, & esp. SIGNALS, Powr Wndws, HYF, & RTB's...
Actually, since around '80, ALL of his toms have pretty much always sounded kick-butt, IMHO....

I know the tom and sound you're talking about. He was an Evans guy then, not sure about now. Thing is, Moving Pix had a killer (maybe the best of all the Rush recordings) drum sound, but that very tour they did the live album (Exit...stage left) and the drum sound on there in *OK* in comparison.
He did have that fiber-glass insulation on the inner shells as well for a while.

I remember an article he wrote some years ago regarding his equipment (around the time he switched from Tama to Ludwig). He said something about the lugs actually pulling away from the shells of his toms due to the tension of the heads, kind of implying that he kept his tom heads pretty tight.

OK, guys - i basically went back & dug out my old concert booklets/press leaflets at that time [that u buy at a concert], to try to help answer my own [?]:

4 the MP tour, NP used:
Evans Look'g Glass [top]; Blue Hydraulic [bot] on his closed toms.

Signals & GUP: Evans Heavy-Duty Rock [top]; Evans Tom-Tom models [bot] - [all non-hydrl.]

Inner shells "Vibra-fibed" by the Percussion Ctr, Ft. Wayne, IND....

Altho I liked the toms sound on MP a lot [only just a lil too 'dry' 4 my taste], I also liked Signals' just even "ever-so-slightly" better [sorry about the sentence structure!]...[record'g EQ/mix'g also has something to do w/ it, of course]
Don't have any info on Power Windows/Hold Your Fire/Roll The Bones - on those r my absol fav NP tom sounds [NTM a lil more 'wet']....

Interesting to note that he seems to NOT have had the DW's Vibrafied.
